STARGAZING & AURORA

Grand Beach after dark.

Sometimes the best part of the day arrives after sunset. Look for a clear sky, give your eyes time to adjust, and enjoy whatever the night brings.

01 · STARGAZING & AURORA

Aurora is a possibility

Geomagnetic activity, darkness and clear skies must come together. A high activity reading does not guarantee a visible aurora. Clouds or changing solar conditions can alter the outlook at the last moment.

Read the outlook carefully

Our conditions page combines official weather with NOAA space weather information. The planetary Kp index describes broad geomagnetic activity. It is not a local chance of seeing aurora.

Enjoy the night responsibly

Use a lawful, accessible viewpoint, respect private land and park hours, carry a light and dress for the temperature. Avoid stopping on a roadway and never step onto lake ice to improve a view.
